As a
Reserve Deputy with the Thurston County Sheriff's
Office, you can assist regular deputies in
enforcing the laws of Thurston County and the United
States of America.
Ride-a-longs with a deputy may
eventually graduate you to solo enforcement. Some of the
job duties include riding with deputies and assisting
them on all kinds of calls to include civil and
criminal. They perform crime scene security for homicide
and meth labs, assist the Marine Unit with inspections
and enforcement and assist the Civil and Warrant Units.
Reserve Deputies also assist by giving talks on safety.
The skills and qualifications a potential Reserve Deputy
must have include but are not limited to:
* Possess a
valid Washington State Drivers License
* Ability to
handle stressful situation and deal with the public in
sometimes hostile circumstances.
* Ability to speak and
write clearly.
* Must be able to demonstrate good
judgement and problem solving abilities.
* Must be
willing and able to successfully pass a background
investigation, polygraph and behavioral assessment with
the same standards as a deputy.
* Must be able to
complete the physical fitness standards as dictated by
the Washington State Criminal Justice Commission within
six months.
* Must be at least 21 years of age, a US
citizen, speak and write the English language and have a
high school diploma or equivalent. The training required
as a Reserve Deputy will include an academy of 220 hours
in all areas of law enforcement including laws, driving,
defensive tactics and weapons handling. Continuing
training while a Reserve Deputy is also performed.
