Corrections Deputy - Lateral

2013 SALARY RANGE:   $4,199 to $5,359/month

TESTING DATE:   Continuous

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
Employees in the Corrections Deputy classification perform work under supervision in the Thurston County Jail that involves booking, custody and release of inmates in accordance with law enforcement rules and regulations.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
High School Diploma or GED; U.S. Citizen; no felony convictions or series of offenses of a minor nature which would lend themselves to establish a pattern of criminal behavior, nor any criminal instances concerning moral turpitude; minimum age of 21 years at time of appointment; must hold or obtain a valid Washington State Driver’s License; ability to read, write and speak the English language as required by RCW 41.14.100. Must pass a background investigation by the Sheriff’s Office, as well as a medical and psychological examination, and polygraph test as well as MEET ALL OF THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have a current Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission Corrections Deputy Certification or equivalent certification from another state-approved academy and have the ability to obtain an equivalency certification within the first twelve (12) months of employment by meeting the standards of the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission.
  • Have successfully completed the testing process and been hired by another jurisdiction from a civil service commission certified eligibility list or other like process.
  • Have at least 12-months continuous work experience and successfully completed any probationary period as a full-time, paid, Corrections Deputy with general corrections experience.
  • From the most recent corrections agency, the applicant must have no more than a 12-month break in service.
  • Pass a written examination and pass a physical fitness test.
  • Must meet Thurston County Civil Service Pre-Employment Screening Standards

In addition, individuals must meet the Sheriff’s Office Standards of Physical Fitness and Employment Standards.

HOW TO APPLY:
In order to be considered for employment, interested individuals must first take and pass a written examination and physical ability test. All initial written and physical ability testing for lateral level candidates is conducted by Public Safety Testing, Inc. (PST). Test dates are available on a continuous basis; check the PST website for test schedule and locations, or call 1-866-447-3911 if you don’t have access to the Internet. Applications will not be accepted from individuals who have not successfully passed both the written examination and physical ability test.

Qualified applicants will be contacted by Thurston County Civil Service with further instructions as needed. Please do not submit a Thurston County application upon successfully passing the written examination and physical ability test without first being contacted by Thurston County Civil Service.
