Lacey, Olympia, Tumwater, and unincorporated Thurston County have adopted an ordinance that bans stores from giving out many types of single-use plastic bags. Stores must also charge at least 5 cents for paper carryout bags to encourage people to bring reusable bags.

The ordinance took effect July 1, 2014. The information below will help retailers and shoppers understand the ban.
