Thurston County's Sustainability Policy
Sustainability means using natural, financial and human resources in a responsible manner that meets existing needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Thurston County is pursuing several efforts to make our region more
sustainable. For example, in 2007, Thurston
County adopted a sustainability policy that encourages
departments to reduce waste, increase recycling, conserve energy and
water, use green building techniques and practice environmentally
preferable purchasing. As a result of policy, Thurston County
is continually looking for ways to reduce workplace hazards and protect
environmental and financial resources by reviewing the products we are
currently buying, and directing dollars toward more environmentally
responsible alternatives.
Thurston County has also embraced a far-reaching Energy Efficiency and Conservation Strategy to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.
Our goal is to lead by example and improve our own operations, while helping others do the same.
