Letter from the Auditor

Important Information
for Thurston County Voters

Dear Voters of Thurston County:

Welcome to the 2001 Thurston County Local Voters’ Pamphlet! This fall, you are going to have an opportunity to shape the future of our community by participating in the election process. You will be voting on local races that affect you, your family, and your neighborhood. That is why we selected the theme, “SHAPING OUR COMMUNITY –  ONE VOTE AT A TIME.”

Your participation in the primary will help determine which candidates in six local races will advance to the general election. The primary election is not countywide and only encompasses select portions of the county. It will include races for Port of Olympia Commissioner District #2, Olympia City Council, and Yelm Fire District Commissioner. To be eligible to vote in the primary, you must be a registered voter and live in the participating districts.

This office is committed to continuing the tradition of providing Thurston County citizens quality information on candidates and issues. You can access this information in a variety of ways. This local voters’ pamphlet is also presented online at www.co.thurston.wa.us/auditor. An audio version of the pamphlet is available to assist visually impaired voters at (360)709-3075. Additionally, there will be candidate forums on Channel 3, TCTV, which are co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters, TCTV and the Thurston County Auditor’s Office.

I would like to congratulate Jena Russell for being selected as the 2001 Primary Election Local Voters’ Pamphlet cover contest winner. In May, Thurston County fifth grade students were invited to compete in a cover design contest. The winners were selected and announced during a press conference in June.

The winning artwork will be displayed on the covers of the 2001 primary and general election pamphlets. The second and third place winners’ artwork will also be featured inside the pamphlets. There were 24 finalists in the competition. This artwork will be on display in the lobby of the Auditor’s Office from now until the end of November. Please stop by our office to see the creativity of our students. On behalf of Thurston County, I thank all of the students who submitted such beautiful artwork.

It is my hope that the information contained in this pamphlet will assist you in voting on these important positions. Remember that we are “SHAPING OUR COMMUNITY – ONE VOTE AT A TIME!”
