Yelm is the fastest growing city in Thurston County. We desperately need to learn to manage our infrastructure. Yelm could become a destination town or a comfortable bedroom community to our larger neighbors, but unfortunately, we are becoming one long road littered with derelict buildings and unrented commercial space.

Yelm must attract locally-owned businesses and support them during growth, must promote tourism, and must encourage infill development with mixed-used housing and retail/office/civic space, so that we have a more walkable, integrated city with an inviting city core.

Yelm must also be more “business-friendly”; we should encourage business, so that store fronts are full, jobs are created, and money earned here is spent here. Keeping money local is crucial to healthy cities; if big chains and box stores siphon our money away, eventually our tax base and independence will erode.

I’m a veteran of Operations Iraqi Freedom, Noble Eagle, and Enduring Freedom. I’ve studied urban planning and sustainable design. I manage The Crowe Law Office, and own residential and commercial property here. I serve on the Yelm Planning Commission, Yelm Business Association, and Yelm Real Estate Network. I have the energy and drive to dedicate to this position.

I am Joe Baker your City councilmember. Yelm is a great place to live, work, and play. My goal is to keep it that way. As a lifetime resident of the Yelm community, I have a deep understanding our community and residents. My wife Judy and I raised our family here. I have dedicated myself to our community volunteering for many local events in addition I served on boards for Intercity Transit, solid waste advisory, TPB, and the Yelm senior center.

During that time we have seen many changes. These changes have allowed many of you to call Yelm your home. Together we have accomplish many road projects, built new parks, improved our local economy, saved our local library, preserved our history, lowered taxes, eliminated dog licenses and remained finically stable even in tough economic times. I will continue to prioritize this community not a special interest group.

It has been an honor to serve the citizens of Yelm and I want to continue to serve you as a member of the Yelm City Council. Please support me, Joe Baker with your vote. Thank you - Joe Baker
