Grant program - Applications due December 18th at 4 p.m.

Food Recovery program logoThurston County Solid Waste is soliciting proposals from eligible non-profit community organizations for projects that enhance the countywide capacity of our food donation system to safely collect, process, store, and distribute surplus edible food. These include proposals for projects that build on or expand existing capacity, as well as new initiatives. Eligible organizations include food pantries, churches, and feeding programs.

Why is Thurston County Solid Waste interested in feeding people?

In 2014, 17 percent or 26,850 tons of Thurston County’s trash was food. And 43 percent or 12,500 tons of this food was edible before it was landfilled. In Thurston County, one in 6 households does not have a secure source of food. This grant opportunity follows the Environmental Protection Agency’s food recovery hierarchy and builds on a similar food recovery program launched in 2013.
